Immersive Journey through Shizuoka's Craftsmanship Legacy: Discovering Edo-Era Artisan Techniques and Time-Honored Crafting Spirit.

Shizuoka, situated in a moderate climate and boasting convenient access from both the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Chubu region, Shizuoka stands out as an exceptional locale.
Shizuoka's legacy of craftsmanship can be traced back to the Edo period, dating nearly 400 years in the past. The great shogun Iyeyasu Tokugawa who ended the civil war era and unified the country, decided to move to Shizuoka after his retirement. Since Ieyasu called a numerous number of artisans across the nation to this region, the foundations of Shizuoka's artisanal tradition were firmly established.

Those craftsmen, drawn to the gentle climate, settled down, establishing the strong foundation for the enduring craft traditions and Shizuoka (former Suruga) thrived in the realm of woodworking crafts like Suruga Sensuji Zaiku, Suruga Lacquerware, Suruga Nurigeta, Hina dolls, Menpa and so on.
As the artisans' skills and spirits have been passed down and integrated into modern techniques such as the plastic models. It is said that the industry evolved from repurposing discarded materials of high-quality wood lacquerware into wooden models, adapting to the changing times by eventually transitioning to plastic products. Japan's models are now esteemed for their world-class quality, attracting numerous model manufacturers to cluster in Shizuoka.
